Sand building material

We need sand to make concrete and masonry and plaster in construction. Generally coarse sand is required for use in concrete, medium for masonry and fine sifted sand for plaster. For good construction it is necessary that the sand used is of good quality.

Sand building material should be like this

  1. The sand used in construction should be clean and free from soil.
  2. Too fine sand should not be used in concrete. Fine sand particles have more surface area due to which more cement is required in it, otherwise the strength is reduced. Due to the large area of fine particles, water is often added only to meet the greater requirement of cement paste, which reduces the strength.
  3. Moisture in the sand increases its volume. 5 to 7% moisture can increase its volume by 35%. Therefore, if there is moisture in the sand, the amount of sand has to be increased appropriately and the amount of water in the concrete has to be decreased.

Disadvantages of bad sand building material

  1.  High clay content in sand increases the water requirement of concrete and mortar, which increases the chances of cracks in the fresh state of concrete and reduces the strength of the structure.
  2.  High clay content in the sand prolongs the settling time of the cement and the cement does not gain sufficient strength within the prescribed time.
  3.  Dissolving chemicals in sand, such as chlorides or sulfates, etc., which can damage concrete.

how to clean sand building material

To wash the sand thoroughly, a 9" thick walled temporary tank measuring 3'×3'×3' should be made.

  • A pipe should be kept in its lower part to take out the soil water.
  • A fine mesh sieve should be placed over this tank, from which only the soil can be removed.
  • It should be washed by pouring only 5-6 tassels of sand on it at a time, then leaving water from the tap on top.

By washing the sand in this way, its soil comes out along with the water.
